So about this time last year I embarked on my first music video. I set up two cameras and a mobile phone in a burnt out school with two floodlights lighting the band (The Vain Dolls). The band did several takes and a lot of messing about so we had enough footage to span the five minutes of song.
As I was editing the footage together with other ‘found’ material it became clear that the song was very long, sort of an album track length rather than a single (which they wanted it to be). I suggested this to them and Robin Downe edited the song down to a more punchy single length. I re-cut the video to the new length and everyone concerned thought it worked better.
The resulting video is something of a creeping, nightmarish vision of a faceless band in contrast to the upbeat nature of the song:
